ในภาษาอังกฤษมีการเปรียบเทียบ Comparison 3 ขั้น คือ
1. Positive degree (การเปรียบเทียบขั้นธรรมดา)
ประโยคบอกเล่า as + adjective + as
ประโยคปฏิเสธ not + (so, as) + adjective + as
เราใช้ as…as ในการเปรียบเทียบของสองสิ่งที่เท่ากันหรือเหมือนกันทุกประการ โดยคำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้เปรียบเทียบในขั้นธรรมดานี้จะไม่มีการเปลี่ยนรูปหรือเติมคำใด ๆ หลัง adjective นั้น ๆ ตัวอย่างเช่น
A cat is as big as a dog. แมวตัวใหญ่ใหญ่เท่ากับหมา
A cat is not as big as dog. แมวไม่ได้ตัวใหญ่เท่ากับหมา
A man is as tall as a woman. ผู้ชาย ตัวสูงเท่ากับ ผู้หญิง
A man is not as tall as a woman ผู้ชายไม่ได้ตัวสูงเท่าผู้หญิง
This car is as expensive as that one. รถคันนี้ราคาแพงเท่ากันกับอีกคันหนึ่ง
as + much + uncountable noun + as
as + many + countable noun + as
ตัวอย่างเช่น
He drinks as much coffee as I do. เขาดื่มกาแฟมากพอๆกับฉัน
as + long + as
ตัวอย่างเช่น
The trip took as long as we had expected it to. ทริปนี้ใช้เวลายาวนานพอๆกับที่เราคาดการณ์ไว้
2. Comparitive degree (การเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่า) เป็นการเปรียบเทียบ adjective ขั้นกว่า เพื่อแสดงความไม่เท่าเทียมกันของบุคคล 2 คนหรือสิ่งของ 2 สิ่ง
-er + than
ตัวอย่างเช่น
May is older than Ken. เมย์อายุมากกว่าเคน
A man is taller than a woman. ผู้ชายสูงกว่าผู้หญิง
Today is hotter than yesterday. วันนี้อากาศร้อนกว่าเมื่อวาน
more + noun + than
ตัวอย่างเช่น
Alice is more beautiful than Emma. อลิซสวยกว่าเอมม่า
This bag is more expensive than that bag. กระเป๋าใบนี้แพงกว่าใบนั้น
Yesterday we sold more computers than we usually do. เมื่อวานเราขายคอมพิวเตอร์ได้มากกว่าที่เราเคยขายกันมา
less + (adjective) + than
ตัวอย่างเช่น
This house is less expensive than that one is. บ้านหลังนี้ราคาแพงน้อยกว่าบ้านอีกหลัง
3. Superlative degree (การเปรียบเทียบขั้นสูงสุด)
the + -est + noun
ตัวอย่างเช่น
She is the eldest woman in the world. หล่อนคือหญิงที่อายุมากที่สุดในโลก
Minnie is the tallest girl in class. มินนี่คือผู้หญิงที่สูงที่สุดในห้องเรียน
the most + (adjective) + noun
ตัวอย่างเช่น
This is the most expensive car in the world. นี่คือรถที่ราคาแพงที่สุดในโลก
It’s the most difficult part of my exam. มันคือข้อสอบที่ยากที่สุดของฉัน
