อย่างเเรกต้องมาทำความเข้าใจกันก่อนว่า ในภาษาอังกฤษเรามีนับจำนวนหรือเรียงลำดับสองแบบ แบบเเรกคือ Cardinal Number นั่นก็คือตัวเลขที่เอาไว้บอกจำนวน หรือของต่างๆว่ามีจำนวนอยู่เป็นเท่าไหร่ เช่น One, two, three, four, five. 1 อัน 2 อัน 3 อย่างเช่น
- They ordered 18 sandwiches. พวกเขาสั่งแซนวิชทั้งหมด 18 อัน
- He wore the number 23. เขาใส่เสื้อเบอร์ 23

ส่วน Ordinal Number ก็คือตัวเลขที่เอาไว้บอก ลำดับ ตำแหน่ง อันดับ ของสิ่งนั้นๆ เช่น 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. ซึ่งจะเป็นการบอกลำดับอย่างเช่น วันที่ 1 วันที่ 2 หรือ ผู้เข้าแข่งขันรางวัลชนะเลิศอันดับที่ 1 หรืออย่างเช่น
- Our school is thirty-third in the state. โรงเรียนของเราเป็นโรงเรียนลำดับที่ 33 ในรัฐนี้
- Sam is my seventh pet. แซมคือสัตว์เลี้ยงตัวที่ 7 ของฉัน

Ordinal Numbers
เรามักจะใช้ ordinal numbers เพื่อบอกเกี่ยวกับลำดับสิ่งของต่างๆหรือเอาไว้บอกขั้นตอนของกระบวนการอะไรบางอย่าง
- first 1st / ที่หนึ่ง
- second 2nd / ที่สอง
- third 3rd / ที่สาม
- fourth 4th / ที่สี่
- fifth 5th / ที่ห้า
- sixth 6th / ที่หก
- seventh 7th / ที่เจ็ด
- eighth 8th / ที่แปด
- ninth 9th / ที่เก้า
- tenth 10th / ที่สิบ เป็นต้น
