Gerund คือ V-ing ที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นคำนาม gerund ไม่สามารถทำหน้าที่เป็นกริยาแท้ ( Finite Verb ) ในประโยค แต่สามารถทำหน้าที่เป็นประธาน กรรม ส่วนสมบูรณ์ ( Complement ) ของ Verb to be หรือ อื่นๆ ที่คำนามทั่วไปทำได้ ตัวอย่างเช่น
- Seeing is believing.
- Seeing ในประโยคนี้ทำหน้าที่เป็นประธานของประโยค ส่วน believing ทำหน้าที่เป็นคำนามที่เป็นส่วนสมบูรณ์ของ Verb to be
- Rob quit smoking because of his deteriorating health.
- Smoking ทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมของกริยา quit ในประโยคนี้
- Andy’s excellent skill at cooking enables him to become the executive chef at a famous hotel in Bangkok.
- ในประโยคนี้ cooking ทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมของบุรพบท ( object of preposition ) at ทั้งนี้เพราะ preposition สามารถตามได้ด้วยคำนาม หรือ V-ing
กริยาที่ตามด้วย Gerund ได้แก่
Admit , Avoid , Consider , Enjoy , Finish , Imagine , Keep ,Mind ,Miss ,Postpone ,Resent ,Resist
ข้อควรระวัง
- เราามารถใช้ possessive adjective ( my , your , his , her ,etc .) ขยายหน้า gerund ได้
I hope you don’t mind my calling you very late at night.
2. Gerund ถือเป็นคำนามเอกพจน์และใช้คู่กับกริยาเอกพจน์เสมอ
Smoking in public places is prohibited.
กริยาบางตัวสามารถตามได้ทั้ง infinitive หรือ gerund โดยที่ความหมายเหมือนกันหรือแตกต่างกันเพียงเล็กน้อยเท่านั้นเอง เช่น Allow , begin , continue , deserve , dislike , intend , like , love , neglect , prefer , start
- The teams will start to play at 7.00 P.M.
- The teams will start playing at 7.00 P.M.
ขณะเดียวกัน กริยาบางตัวสามารถตามได้ทั้ง infinitive และ gerund แต่ความหมายจะแตกต่างกัน กริยาในกลุ่มนี้ได้แก่
- stop/quit + infinitive ( หยุดเพื่อที่จะทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง )
- stop/quit + gerund ( หยุดทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง )
- Regret + infinitive ( เสียใจที่จะทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง )
- Regret + gerund ( เสียใจในสิ่งที่ทำลงไป )
- Forget + infinitive ( ลืมทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง )
- Forget + gerund ( ลืมสิ่งที่ได้ทำไปแล้ว )
- Remember + infinitive ( จำได้ที่จะทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง )
- Remember + gerund ( จดจำสิ่งที่ทำไปแล้วได้ )
- Try + infinitive ( พยายามทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง )
- Try + gerund ( ทดลองทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง )
ตัวอย่างเช่น
The government tries to promote the use of gasohol.
Many people have tried using gasohol and found it quite cost-effective.
